Cochrane, AB – Gearing up for school doesn’t have to be stressful. But for some families, the costs associated with supplies and clothing can be financially difficult and emotionally overwhelming.

The Cochrane and Area Family Resource Network (FRN) in partnership with Staples and Kiwanis Club are coordinating a back-to-school Backpack Program. Providing backpacks gives relief to families by removing some of the financial barriers and stigma for children starting school without the required school supplies.

“We’re happy to be able to help kids get their school year off to a good start,” says Kim Krawec, Manager of Cochrane Family and Community Support Services. “This is a great example of how our community comes together to help each other.”

Typically, the program supports more than 100 children and youth to access school supplies and the need may be higher this year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year, families registered for the program can enjoy activities and treats and have a back-to-school photo taken while picking up their backpacks.

To register for the Backpack Program or to donate, please visit the FRN at 127-1 Avenue W or call 403-851-2255. Donations can also be made at Staples, 40 Quarry Street E.
