What IS Plein Air Painting?

En plein air is a French expression meaning “in the open air”, and refers to the act of painting outdoors with the artist’s subject in full view. Plein air artists capture the spirit and essence of a landscape or subject by incorporating natural light, color and movement into their works.

Join internationally renowned watercolor artist and founder of Blue Pine Arts, Trupti Karjinni, for a relaxed and inspiring plein air painting demonstration.

In this live outdoor session, Trupti will show how she captures the beauty of Alberta’s landscapes using her artisanal watercolor supplies — including handmade paper pads, paints, and sketchbooks crafted under her brand, Blue Pine Arts.

You’ll get a front-row view into how she paints on location using a compact, travel-friendly setup. Watch as she brings a scene to life with expressive washes, rich pigments, and elegant brushwork — all while sharing tips, stories, and insights into painting outdoors.
